8-week implementation of SEND Underwriting Workbench in London Market
May 21, 2025 SEND , Case study , Underwriting

See how we delivered a fully functioning underwriting workbench MVP in just 8 weeks, enabling faster policy handling and a better user experience

About the customer

A specialty insurer in the London market, recently acquired by a private equity firm. The company is focused on scaling operations, especially in reinsurance, while modernising its underwriting infrastructure.

Context

Tech stack: SEND Underwriting Workbench

Timeframe: October – November 2024 (Phase 1), Phase 2 ongoing into 2025

Team: 7 full-time consultants (analysts, developers, testers), supported part-time by 2 developers and 2 testers

The project started with a tight 8-week timeline to deliver an inception phase, system integration, and go-live for one business line. The scope expanded mid-project due to client needs, requiring budget adjustments and additional resourcing. Phase 2 focuses on expanding the system across business lines and enhancing data visualization and tracking.

Business challenge

Following its acquisition by a private equity firm, the insurer aimed to increase its underwriting capacity without growing headcount. Existing systems were outdated and difficult for underwriters to use, especially during peak renewal seasons. The client needed a scalable, modern solution that could support faster decision-making and streamline data input processes.

Our objective

Initially brought in to implement SEND, Sollers was tasked with delivering a working minimum viable product (MVP) of the underwriting workbench within eight weeks, ready for use by underwriters during the renewal season. This involved taking the project from day one of inception to production release. The scope evolved from a proof of concept (POC) to a full-scale, production-ready implementation

Implemented solution

Sollers implemented the SEND Underwriting Workbench, focusing on reinsurance as the first business line. Throughout the project, Sollers worked closely with the client’s IT and business teams to:

  • Define scope during the inception phase
  • Create and validate the architecture and user journeys
  • Build critical functionalities, including policy backloading and UI enhancements
  • Run user acceptance testing (UAT) and provide live support during rollout

The solution delivered was not a one-off prototype but a scalable platform now being extended across the business.

Interesting facts

  • The solution was implemented primarily remotely, with in-person collaboration at key milestones (inception, demo, UAT)
  • Originally planned as a proof of concept, but transformed into a full Minimum Viable Product (MVP) based on UX research and user feedback
  • Strong client engagement and swift decisions enabled rapid development and on-time delivery of the solution
  • Unique use case: implementation focused on reinsurance, whereas underwriting workbenches are typically used for insurance
  • Despite the time constraints, the scope of the project was subject to significant changes. We were able to deliver the project successfully for two main reasons. Firstly, the client was very decisive and approved changes and budgets quickly, which facilitated our work. Secondly, we were able to quickly arrange support from additional SEND-trained developers, including those working on other implementations.

What's next

The second phase is underway, extending the solution to all business lines by the end of 2025. Future enhancements include full task tracking, deeper data validation, and additional automation features to support scalability.
