A little bit of Agile is not enough
Cologne, September 21, 2018: Silo mentality is putting the digital transformation of insurers at risk, was one of the conclusions at the “Digitalization in Insurance" event by Sollers Consulting. Insurers and banks are increasingly using Agile project management to transform their business. However, if Agile is implemented half-heartedly, the benefits may be lost, warned Michał Trochimczuk, Managing Partner of Sollers Consulting, yesterday in Cologne. Struggle for data - The motor insurance of tomorrow will be driven by technology
European insurers are preparing for a new era in motor insurance. On January 24, Insurance Europe and the Association of Mutual Insurers (Amice) launched a campaign data4drivers. They demand that the data generated by semiautonomous and autonomous cars shall belong to the drivers and not to the manufacturers of the cars. The petition is, among others, backed by the German Insurance Association GDV and by British ABI. Germany’s car producers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen (Audi, Porsche and others) and their suppliers (Bosch, ZF and others) are investing heavily in technology for autonomous cars. Volvo recently announced that it is “fairly confident” it can start selling autonomous vehicles in 2021.

Over the last three decades, insurance markets in CEE have increasingly attracted investors from many developed markets. These investments have helped insurers to modernise their infrastructure. Now CEE insurers themselves are starting to expand their business in CEE and beyond.

Clearing the hurdles set by GDPR
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is the new EU regulation, is causing insurance companies a headache. It brings in changes that need to be implemented before the looming deadline of the 25th May 2018. The most talked about change for the GDPR is the “Right to be forgotten”, where individuals can ask companies to remove their personal details from their systems. There are two key areas of change to the existing EU law. The regulation will firstly oblige all companies that hold personal data of individuals residing in the EU, regardless of their location to adhere. This will have an impact not only on the EU insurance industry, but also on the global insurance industry. The second large change in the regulation is regarding the personal data rights of EU & UK residents, which includes the “Right to be Forgotten”. EU & UK residents will also be able to obtain the information from the insurer of how their data is being used and a 72-hour notification window of when their data has been breached.

The new digital age creates challenges for insurers; many of which are struggling to find the right answers. One thing is clear; part of the answer must involve modernising their IT architectures. During the international conference “Innovation in Insurance” in Warsaw more than 250 insurance professionals from twelve countries discussed what will be the decisive business factors surrounding modernisation. Conclusions were supported by the practical experience of projects at Allianz (UK), AXA (Poland), Basler (Germany), Element (Germany), Nationale Nederlanden (Poland) and Prudential (Poland).

Sollers is driving the digital future of the insurance industry
Cologne, 9th October 2017: Last weekend, from 6th to 8th October, the second hackathon InsurHack® took place at RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne. 26 interdisciplinary teams consisting of 130 developers, designers and programmers from 17 different countries took part in the competition to create executable software solutions and business ideas within 48 hours.
The Fight Against Legacy Systems
Legacy systems in the insurance industry today, with all their quirks and draw backs, require significant effort in order to maintain. Many times, the board rooms of large insurance companies appear to apply the old proverb “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” indiscriminately to their IT systems. However, over time old IT architecture can become unwieldy and unmanageable. As additional configurations and resources are added to address changing business needs, the code and systems accumulate. After several years of this natural process, the IT architecture leaves the company in a precarious state by exposing them to multiple risks. This sort of legacy is applicable to many parts of IT architecture such as claims management, billing, policy administration systems as well as document and content storages.
Sollers Consulting supports InsurHack® 2017
The Hackathon, InsurHack® will again take place at RheinEnergieSTADION in Cologne from 6th to 8th October 2017. Initiator and organizer is the Zurich Group Germany. As in the previous year, Sollers Consulting will support this event as a partner. The first edition of the event attracted 130 participants from all over the world to the extraordinary event location in Cologne. 30 teams developed highly innovative and practical ideas in an agile manner.
Insurance fraud in Europe
Scale of insurance fraud in Europe Global insurance fraud (undetected and detected) could amount to 10% of all claims expenditures in Europe according to a 2013 report by Insurance Europe[1], the European association of national insurance federations. A report[2] by the Association of British Insurers in 2012 explains that on average 15 claims an hour in the UK are exposed to be of a fraudulent nature. The British industry in 2011 detected £1bn worth of fraudulent claims; it was also estimated that undetected fraud could represent as much as £2bn additional that year.
Profiting from differences in the EU motor insurance market
Motor insurers in the UK should look to other markets in the EU for ideas on how to develop more flexible products to help reduce the rising cost of cover for their customers.
Unique technology will support insurance sales conducted by banks
Insurance sales may become an important additional source of revenue for many banks. Diversifying product ranges becomes an interesting proposition when one considers the current demanding market conditions. However, from the perspective of the insurer who wants to be present in other channels, it is often a big challenge. Banks rarely decide to sell standard products. They expect the insurers to adapt and offer a comprehensive approach - that is, the possibility of creating solutions related to banking products and stand-alone products, as well as adequate support for their sales efforts. One of the major barriers is often a lack of appropriate technological tools. A solution that would harmonize with the characteristics of the channel and allow the creation of a flexible product. At the same time, providing a very short time-to-market is important due to lack of time to hold meetings in order to close the deal.
Overview of Motor Insurance in Poland by Sollers Consulting
Motor insurance constitutes a major portion of the P&C insurance sector in Poland. Its market share according to the Polish Insurance Association (PIU) is 49.9% (GWP). Joint indemnities for Casco and MTPL total 68.8%. Naturally, this market started to develop along with the vehicle market value rise. Motor insurance however has not proven itself to be entirely profitable: Upon realization of potential profit, every insurer desired to secure its share in the market. The subsequent competition and price war eventually resulted in negative technical results for the market. Ever tighter regulations introduced by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) have also had a negative impact on the insurance companies’ net profit. To mitigate this, insurers must increase premiums.
Insurtech is coming. Will it impact your business?
Only 2% percent of the world is insured which means there is so much potential in the insurance market. It is estimated that underinsured property risk counts toward USD 221 billion per year. So, it seems that there are still chances for insurance companies to gain market share and survive. Will the insurers be able to cope with upcoming changes in the market? Will InsurTech startups, a new Generation of clients and other technological advances be a threat to the market or rather, will they give insurance companies the tools to thrive? Many global trends are completely unpredictable, but can still influence entire industries. Can they be controlled? If so, how? All can depend on Insurers’ ability to adapt and change with the times.
Old systems – why should insurers get rid of them?
Implementing a new system and clearing out an old system is a costly process. Choosing a tech partner is not an easy decision, which is why it’s most often put off until later. Yet the return on an investment in innovation should not be underestimated.
According to Sollers Consulting, Agile is a forward-looking method that significantly contributes to project success.
What is Agile? Agile is a flexible project management methodology. It is an increasingly popular method, not only in the IT sector, but also in many other industries around the world. Its main advantages are reduction of the risk of project failure and facilitation of rapid implementation of important business and IT changes, even within a few months. The Agile methodology has been used successfully by Sollers Consulting for many years, inside the company as well as in external projects conducted for the largest European companies in the financial sector. Due to our long experience in implementing projects with this method, Sollers knows it is much more advantageous than the traditional Waterfall method.
Brexit impacts outsourcing IT services to Eastern Europe.
The voting results from 23rd have enormous impact on EU reality as we speak. A debate regarding a new shape of the EU without the UK has already begun and gets heated. While many experts focus on possible GDP (Gross Domestic Product) drop and harsh words between London and Brussels/Berlin, in some cases it might be the cooperation between the UK and countries of Eastern Europe, which will suffer the most.

Sollers Consulting about Bancassurance in Poland
Bancassurance in Poland began in the early 1990s and quickly became very popular amongst customers. Initially, it seemed that it would quickly become as successful as it had been in France but after the first supervisory regulations were introduced, this was not clear-cut anymore. The law arose as an obstacle that threatened its dominant position, the same way it had occurred in the UK. Sollers Consulting has assessed Bancassurance’s development in Poland and believes it can still be a “winner” in this market.
Sollers Consulting and Millensurance Will the new generation revolutionize the insurance sector?
As early as 2026, representatives of the so-called Generation Y (the generation born after 1980) will make up about 75% of employees and potential customers for insurance companies.
How Sollers Consulting attracts Generation Y
When the new generation is looking for a job, they pay attention not only to salary and development opportunities, but also to the working environment. Nowadays, basic benefits are simply not enough. Sometimes workplace conditions are the most important factors in helping Generation Y decide where they would like to work It is a global issue, since if you are not Google or Apple, it is very hard to gain top quality programmers or analysts. For Generation Y, the workplace is very important, as we spend most of our time at work. In order to meet the requirements of the younger generation, companies should provide comfort, innovative solutions, create a suitable working environment and the opportunity to relax These needs that have been noticed by Polish companies. Recently, offices in Poland have been catching up to the standards which exist in Silicon Valley. A good example of such a company is Sollers Consulting, a European Advisory and Integrator Company specializing in services for the financial sector (insurance, banking, leasing).
The price war will again erode prices of motor policies on Polish market
It looks like a difficult year for the insurance companies. Again, there will be a price war, which will result in the deterioration on companies’ earnings. In addition, insurers will have to pay the new bank levy, so for smaller and weaker companies the only solution may appear to be consolidation.
It was supposed to be a small business.
When in 2000 Michal Trochimczuk and Marcin Pluta set up Sollers Consulting, they were convinced that this would be a small advisory company with a few employees. After fifteen years, it turned out that the company has grown and at present there are 260 employees. Yet this is not the end, as within two years, the entrepreneurs are planning to increase this number up to 500. Moreover, since the start of Sollers Consulting, its’ business model has evolved.
